8.6 Lifting and handling

Safe use of ladders and stepladders:

Risk: Concussions, bruises, broken bones caused by slips and falls from a height.

Ladder usage procedure:

 Use the appropriate ladder.

 Inspect the ladder before and after each use.

 Place the ladder on a firm surface, make sure it is slip resistant, use secure backing, or have someone hold the ladder.

 Keep the ladder away from power contacts.

 When carrying a ladder, hold it near the center and keep it close to your body.

 Face the ladder while climbing it, keep the center of your body between the side rails of the ladder while standing or climbing on the ladder.

Remember:

 Do not use a chair, barrel, or box in place of a ladder.

 Do not use a ladder with loose, broken, or missing rungs, screws, or bolts.

 Do not use a ladder in a horizontal position.

Safe Lifting:

Risk: Back, neck, arm or leg pain, muscle strain or dislocation of joints, sometimes leading to chronic pain.

Lifting procedure:

 Clear the area before lifting.

 Test the object ’ s weight by lifting one if there is more than one object stacked on top of each other.

 Tighten your muscles as you prepare to lift.

 Grab the object firmly, keeping the load balanced.

 Bend your knees (squat position), keeping your back as straight as possible. Use your legs to lift the object.

 Carry the object close to your body with your elbows bent and upper arms straight.

 Move your feet to turn, do not twist your body.

Remember:

 Wear proper gloves when handling objects that are hot, cold or have sharp edges.

 When placing the object on a surface above the floor, place the edge of the load (object) on the surface and slide it into place.

 Whenever possible, use trolleys.

 Wear the correct footwear to protect your feet and reduce slip hazards.

Preventing slips, trips, and falls:

Risk : Cuts, bruises, concussions, sprains, strains, and broken bones.

Safety procedure:

 Carry small loads close to your body, below chest level so you can see over or around you.

 Close cabinets, drawers, and doors as soon as you finish your work.

 Adjust your pace while walking, and do not run.

 Slow down and take small, careful steps if the surface is rough, cluttered, slippery or at an angle.

If you fall:

 Do not move if you think you have hurt yourself and call for help immediately.

Housekeeping:

 Watch out for slip and trip hazards in your work area and wherever you walk.

 Immediately correct any hazard that might cause a fall and report it to your Line Manager.

 Clean up spills immediately.

 Take extra care whenever you see a wet floor sign.

 Keep walkways clear of boxes and extension cords.

 Immediately move anything that is stored near stairways and report the hazard to your Line Manager.

 Notify your Line Manager if there is nowhere to store new materials properly.
