Unit 13
Writing: a letter
1 Think of someone you would like to say thank you to.
2 Plan what you are going to write. • What are you thanking the person for? • What news can you tell them? • What question will you ask them?
3 Write a first draft, then read it.
Revising checklist
Have you laid out your letter correctly? Have you thanked the person? Have you written some news about yourself? Have you asked a question?
4 Can you make it better? Make changes. Then proofread your letter.
Proofreading checklist Did I put a comma after the greeting? Did I put a comma after the closing? Did I put a comma in the date? Do all my sentences end with a full stop ( . ), ? or ! ?
• Show pupils how to write an address on an envelope using the sample above as a model. Conventions differ. Tell pupils if you wish them to punctuate the address differently. • Explain that what we write must be correct for our audience . For example, we write differently to each of these people: a friend, a teacher, someone we have not met. • With pupils’ help, continue to keep examples of their writing to record progress and achievement. Share these ‘ portfolios ’ with them. • For work on writing addresses and envelopes, see Workbook 2 page 101.
