Unit 14 Lisa’s Story
Let’s talk Do you know anyone who plays tricks on people? When are tricks funny? When are they unkind? Reading Lisa’s Story
It was Sunday afternoon and we were by the river. It was peaceful. Birds were singing. Daddy and Mommy sat and chatted quietly to Grandpa. Suddenly, Alex shouted, “Look out! There’s an alligator in the water!” I grabbed my little sister, Lulu. I ran with her to the car. Mommy jumped up
and yelled: “Come away from the river, Alex. Now!” Alex began to laugh. “Fooled you!” he shouted. “There is no alligator.” Daddy was angry. He said, “That wasn’t funny.” Alex just grinned.
Lulu cried and cried. Then she smelt grilled chicken from the barbecue and stopped. We all ate lunch. Then, Alex and I looked for frogs. Soon, he shouted again. “Help! There’s a snake!” “I don’t believe you,” I snapped. I was sure this was another stupid trick. Alex said in a small, terrified voice. “Lisa…I’m scared.”
• Let’s talk: Discuss these questions as a class. Be sensitive to any pupils who have experienced an unkind trick. • Pause after “Help! There’s a snake!” and ask pupils what they think will happen next ( predicting outcomes ). • You can use this story to demonstrate use of exclamation marks . Ask pupils to find the exclamation marks and to say why they have been used. Ask pupils how they would say those sentences.
