3 Rewrite this story in the past tense.
The children go fishing. They see lots of fish.
The fish come close to them. They give the fish to Mom. They eat them for dinner.
4 Complete these sentences using the past tense of the verbs in brackets. 1 Yesterday, Auntie May ________ from Grenada. (come) 2 We ________ a very small snake in the yard. (see) 3 They ________ a picnic by the river. (have) 4 Lulu and Lisa ________ they wanted to go. (say)
5 Dad ________ Lulu a hug. (give) 6 ________ you see a snake? (do)
• To introduce irregular past tenses, say the following sentences: “Yesterday I comed home late,” “Yesterday I came home late.” Ask pupils which is correct. Help them to realise that often they will know the correct form of irregular past tense verbs.
