Paragraphs
A paragraph is a group of sentences all about one topic. The first sentence often tells us what the paragraph is about (the main idea ). 1 Writing is easier to read if it is split into paragraphs. 2 Paragraphs make it easier to write. We organise our ideas in paragraphs
1 Scan the text on pages 107 and 108. Which paragraph introduces the topic of coconuts? Which paragraph sums it up?
2 ‘Coconuts’ has four main paragraphs. What is the main idea of each paragraph? Example: 1 Food and drink è Coconuts provide us with food and drink.

Remind them of the glossary. • Question 6: Research skills Encourage pupils to think of all the places they can go to find things out, such as an encyclopaedia, the internet, the library, their parents or other adults. • Paragraphs question 1: Point out how the text is structured. The first paragraph introduces the text and the final paragraph is the conclusion. • For more work on main idea in paragraphs, see Workbook 2 page 92.
