3 Rewrite the story below using pronouns instead of the words that are underlined.
Example: 1 – She made a cake.
Melissa wanted to help. Melissa made a cake. The cake was good and Melissa wanted to share it. Josh came home and Josh ate some. Mommy and Daddy came home and Mommy and Daddy ate some. Grandpa came home and Grandpa ate some. Poor Melissa. Melissa only had a tiny bit of cake.
5 Read aloud both the story you have written and the one above. • Which story sounds better? • Why do you think that?
• Exercise 5: You may want to ask selected pupils to read the original story aloud to a partner or to the class and then read the rewritten one. They should ask themselves, ‘Which one is easier to listen to?’ Help them to see that the first story repeats the names too often. It is unnecessary (because we know who is being talked about) and sounds repetitive.
