narrator : Samuel thanked Mama Rosa and went out for a walk in the bush. Soon, he met a potter. samue L (kindly) : Why is your little boy crying? potter (unhappily) : Because he is hungry. samue L : He can have my bread. potter : Thank you, kind boy. Please take this pot in return. narrator : Samuel took the pot and went on. Soon, he met a man with a horse. samue L : Why are you so sad, sir? man : I have no pot to cook in and I can’t sell my horse to get money. samue L : I have a splendid pot. Please take it. man : Thank you, kind boy. Please take my old horse in return. narrator : Samuel took the old horse and soon met a band of musicians. samue L : Why do you all look so miserable? band leader (unhappily) : We need a horse to pull our cart. samue L (kindly) : You can have my horse.

What do you think will happen next?

• If appropriate to your class, tell pupils that all the words in brackets ( sadly , kindly , unhappily ) are adverbs . They tell us how the words are said. Adverbs tell us how an action is done (e.g. slowly, quietly, carefully) and many of them end in ‘ly’. To demonstrate, play a game where pupils are asked to do something (e.g. walk or speak) in the manner of the adverb (e.g. slowly or noisily). • Pause at the end of this page to ask pupils to make predictions . Write their predictions on the board.
