1 Why do you think Mama Rosa could not buy Samuel a drum? 2 Where did Mama Rosa get the bread? 3 Why did the Man want a pot? 4 What do the words in brackets, such as (sadly) tell us? 5 “Here is some bread. If you care for others, it will be a drum one day.” What do you think Samuel thought when his mother said this to him? 6 Did Samuel learn to play the drum? How do you know? Speaking and listening Read aloud from ‘Why do you all look so miserable?’ on page 122 to the end. Pupil A is samuel and the narrator . Pupil B is the band leader .
• Speak the words with lots of expression. • Tell your partner what he or she did well. • Then swap roles.
• Question 1: Pupils are asked to make inferences and draw conclusions . The play does not directly state the answer but, in the character list, Mama Rosa is described as ‘a poor woman’ so we may conclude that she didn’t have enough money to buy a drum. DA Speaking and listening: The narrator has only one line. Pupils can work in groups of three with the least confident pupil taking the role of narrator. ICT Use a phone to record some of the readings. Play it back and ask pupils what was good and what they could do better.
