3 Write a sentence about something belonging to your teacher. Write a sentence about something belonging to your friend. Use ’s in each of your sentences.
When the noun ends with an ‘s’ or when it is a plural ending in ‘s’, we add ’ only.
the book belonging to James = James ’ book the tails of the cats = the cats ’ tails
4 Describe each of these things using ’ .

• Language, Possessive nouns: You may want to explain that when the plural doesn’t end with an ‘s’ (e.g. ‘children’, ‘men’), we add ’s . • Exercise 4: Explain that ‘which belong(s) to’ has the same meaning as ‘of’ in this exercise. • Word work: You may want to tell pupils that words with meanings that are the same or nearly the same are called synonyms .
