Unit 17
Writing: a review 1 Answer these questions about ‘Samuel’s Drum’ or about another story you have read. • What is the story about? • Who is the main character? • Which character did you like best?
• Why did you like him or her? • Which is your favourite part of the story?
2 Write the title: Samuel’s Drum
3 Write a sentence to answer each of the questions in Exercise 1 above. This is your review of the story. 4 Revise your review and draw a picture to go with it.
5 Proofread your review. Use the proofreading checklist on page 105.
• Writing: Explain that a review tells us what the writer thinks of the story (or play). Reading a review helps us to decide if we would like to read the story. There are reviews of, for example, books, movies, plays, electronic games and restaurants. • Extension: Ask pupils to write reviews of books they have read or of their favourite stories. Collect them in a folder or display for other pupils to read. • For more work on reviews, see Workbook 2 page 80.
