Listening Texts
Unit 13 Listen up! page 93 CR The following listening text is in standard English. You may translate it into the Creole spoken by pupils in order to practise listening in the pupils’ native language. You may then ask them to summarise the message in standard English or to translate selected sentences. Tell pupils that you are going to read aloud a voicemail message. As they listen they should ask themselves who it is for ( audience ), and why the person has left the message ( purpose ). “Hello. This is a message for Nathan. It’s Auntie Sonia here. I’m calling to wish you a very happy birthday. I’m sorry I can’t be there with you in Grenada today. Your mom told me she’s taking you and three friends to the beach and then back home for cake. Have a great time! I’ve posted a present to you. It should arrive in the next few days. I’m looking forward to seeing you at Christmas. Bye for now.” Encourage pupils to ask questions if they don’t understand any part of the message. Elicit answers to the questions on page 93. Answers: 1 Nathan; 2 Auntie Sonia; 3 To wish him happy birthday and to tell him she had posted a present. Ask pupils when Auntie Sonia is going to see Nathan next. Finally, ask pupils to pretend they are Nathan and to tell their partner what the message was about in a couple of sentences (i.e. to summarise the voice message). Unit 13 Assessment page 99 Tell pupils you are going to read a voice message. You may choose to read it in Creole. Read the text aloud, then re-read paragraph one and ask them to answer questions 1 and 2; re-read the rest before they answer questions 3 and 4. Hi Dana. Seymour here. Can you come to the beach with us on Sunday? We’re going in the car and Mom’s making a picnic. She says that, if she has time, she’ll make her amazing coconut cake. We’ll probably go at 10 o’clock and get back at about 3. Jodi is coming too and bringing her inflatable dinosaur! Have you seen it? It’s crazy and fantastic fun in the sea. I know we’ve got a spelling test on Monday but I’m going to try to learn the spellings on Saturday. Hope you can come. Call me back soon.
Unit 15 Listen up! page 107 Tell pupils you are going to read some coconut facts. Read the text then ask pupils to read questions 1–3 at the top of page 107. Read the text again. Give them time to answer the questions, then read the text a third time, giving pupils time to change their answers if necessary. Ask pupils to read questions 1–3 at the top of page 107. Tell them to listen carefully to find the answers as you read aloud some coconut facts. Coconut Facts Did you know that coconuts float on water? They can float hundreds of miles to other islands. They grow well in sandy places so, when they get to another island, they can put down roots on the sea shore and grow into trees. Every coconut tree makes about 30 coconuts every year so we will probably never run out of coconuts. Unit 15 Assessment page 113 Read this text aloud then ask pupils to answer true or false to the questions on page 113. A lot of people think that bananas grow on trees. They don’t. They grow on very large plants. The ‘trunk’ is not made of wood. It is made up of tight circles of leaves. The stem that carries the bananas is called a ‘hand’ and each hand has ‘fingers’. Each finger is a banana. Bananas are usually harvested when they are green because then they are still hard. When they are ripe, bananas go yellow and soft. If you pick them when they are ripe, it is easy to damage them. Unit 18 Speaking and listening page 130 Make sure that each pupil has a pencil and a piece of paper. Tell pupils that you are going to read out a set of instructions. They must follow the instructions one- by-one. Read each instruction clearly, twice. Then wait while pupils do what you have told them. 1 Draw a house in the middle of the page. Give the house two windows and a door. 2 Draw a tree on the right of the house. 3 Draw a boy and a girl on the left of the house. 4 Draw the sun above the house. 5 Draw two clouds – one on each side of the sun. Tell pupils to swap drawings with a partner. Then read the instructions again while each pupil checks their partner’s picture.
