Crocodile was vexed. “I will eat Monkey!” he thought and he opened his mouth wide. Then he thought again. “We must not be enemies,” he thought. He said to Monkey, “From now on, we will share everything. We will each have half of the top and half of the bottom of every plant.” Monkey saw that Crocodile was not stupid. In fact, he was a good, kind friend. So, from that day on, Monkey and Crocodile shared everything and lived happily together.

• Regularly ask pupils to read parts of the text aloud. Assess fluency and ability to read with expression. Check that they can read and pronounce common sight words. • Comprehension questions: From time to time, ask pupils to discuss questions in pairs and to report their views to the class. If pupils express differing opinions, encourage one pupil to ask another the reason for their answer. DA Vary the partners with whom pupils work, sometimes pairing pupils of different abilities.
