2 Complete these sentences. Change the words in brackets to show that there are more than one. Example: In PE we jumped over four boxes .

To make the plural of a word ending in ‘y’, we change the ‘y’ to ‘ i ’ and add ‘ es ’. enemy â enem ies

4 Read this paragraph. Write the plural of each of the words in brackets.

In traditional (story), animals have (friend) and (enemy). They have (family) and (baby). Some animals live in (city). They put on (dress) and go to (party).

DA Exercise 2: Questions 5 and 6 are more challenging. Exercise 4: You may want pupils to write out the whole paragraph or to just write the individual plurals. • Explain how you would like them to answer. • The class can memorise a series of words (a mnemonic) to help them remember the rule about adding ‘es’, such as ‘ bus, box, wash, witch’ (a tongue-twister!). • For more work on plurals, see Workbook 2 pages 25–28.
