Unit 6
Present tense
The present tense tells us what happens usually: We play games.
I You We They The children
play
games.
With he, she and it , we add ‘ s ’ to the verb.
He She It The girl My friend
football.
play s
6 Use the table below to write six sentences. Use the correct form of the verb.
1 We 2 He 3 Lila 4 I 5 The girls 6 Daddy
netball. marbles. cricket. football. rounders.
play / plays
• Point out that ‘ she’ follows the same rule as ‘ the girl’ ; ‘ the children’ and ‘ the girls’ follow the same rule as ‘ they’ . CR Subject–verb agreement is often tricky to grasp especially as the rules may be different in Creole. Emphasise that the third person singular form is the only one that changes. An ‘s’ is added to the end. Give pupils a sentence such as “She plays netball” and ask how they would say it in Creole. Is it different? If so in what way? • Extension: Use variations of the table in Exercise 6 to provide more practice. E.g. Paul / They / You / Mom walk / walks to school/to the shop/to church.
