Mongooses can kill and eat poisonous snakes and poisonous insects. They do not like to be on their own and they live in a pack. Mongooses like to live in rocky places but they can also live in forests or swamps. Some mongooses can be kept as pets.
People like to have mongooses around to protect their homes from rats and snakes. You can even teach them simple tricks.

• Extension: Ask pupils what the main idea of paragraph 1 is. ( What mongooses eat ) • Question 3: Encourage pupils to look for context clues . Ask them to work out the meaning of the word ‘omnivore’ from the words and sentences which follow the word. • Have pupils compare the mongoose in the photographs with the illustration of the mongoose on page 16. ICT Show a YouTube documentary about mongooses to the class. Pause regularly and ask pupils to summarise what they have seen and learnt. • Mongooses were first introduced to the Caribbean from India in the 19th century to clear rats and snakes from the sugar cane plantations.
