Making inferences

Sometimes we can guess information about characters, such as how they feel or why they do things – even though the writer doesn’t tell us. We use clues from pictures or other things that we have been told.

• Question 4: Pupils have to think and search for the answer. ( Verse 3 line 1 – ‘But that’s not true’ ) • Question 5: Answer: because they are brown . Encourage pupils to use context clues to work out the meaning of ‘prefer’. • Question 7: Ask which verse they like best or whether they have ever felt like the poet does in verse 1 or verse 3. Maybe they like the last line where the poet asks the reader what he / she thinks. • For more work on making inferences, see Workbook 2 page 87. Do you know the answers to these questions? How do you know? 1 Where is the boy in the poem? 2 In verse 2 of the poem, who is ‘the lady’? 3 ‘The lady goes inside’. Where do you think she goes?
