Language: joining words and and but

We use and to join two sentences. It was cloudy. It was cool . (two sentences) It was cloudy and it was cool . (one sentence) You only need one capital letter and one full stop in your new sentence.

1 Use and to join these sentences.

Example: We were hot. We were tired.

We were hot and we were tired.

1 It was raining. We got wet. 2 Plants need sun. They need rain. 3 We drink water. We wash in it. 4 The sun keeps us warm. It makes things grow. 5 It was rainy. It was cloudy. 6 It rained a lot. The bananas grew well.

We also use but to join two sentences. And tells us something extra. It was hot and it was sunny. But tells us something surprising or different. It was sunny but it was not hot.

• Discourage pupils from using and more than once in a sentence. • Write a sentence such as, I went to the shop and the church and then I met my friend and we played football and then I went to Grandad’s house . Read it aloud, demonstrating how you get breathless before the end! Ask the pupils to help you to break it up into several shorter sentences.
