Unit 11 Cricket in the Yard

Let’s talk Do you always do as you are told? What happens when you don’t? Reading Cricket in the Yard

Kim and Danny wanted to play cricket in the yard. “Please don’t play next to the house,” said Mom. “Why not?” asked Kim. “I don’t want you to knock over my my plant pots.”

Kim and Danny went into the yard. The cat was asleep on the wall. “Let’s play next to the house,” said Kim. “But your mom said…” Danny started to say. “Yes, but we will be very careful.”

Kim bowled and Danny batted. He hit the ball over the hen coop. Kim raced to get the ball and bowled again. This time Danny hit the ball high in the air. Kim caught it. “You are out!” she roared. Then Danny bowled and Kim batted. She hit the ball hard.

• Pause at the end of this page. Ask pupils to predict what will happen next. • Do pupils think that Danny wanted to play next to the house? • “But your mom said…”. Explain that the three dots (…) tell us that Danny didn’t finish his sentence. • Regularly ask pupils to read aloud. Encourage them to use context and sentence structure to help them decode unfamiliar words.
