Speaking and listening How do you think Kim felt after the pot broke? How did Mom feel? Role play in pairs.

1 Pupil A: Pretend you are Kim. Tell your partner what happened. Say how you felt.

2 Pupil B: Pretend you are Kim’s mom. Tell your partner what you think happened. Say how you felt.

Language: past tense Add ‘ed’

Add ‘ ed ’ to verbs to show that something happened in the past. The cat knock ed over a plant pot.

1 Write the past tense of these verbs. You can find them in the story. 1 want 2 ask 3 knock 4 crash 5 yell 6 roar 7 smash 8 dash

2 Choose three of the past tense verbs from Exercise 1. Use each one in a sentence of your own.

• Speaking and listening: Help pupils to think how each of the characters might feel. Kim might blame the cat. She may be very sorry. Mom might say Kim was naughty because she should not have played near the house. CR Allow pupils to role play in Creole. As a follow-up activity ask them to repeat all or part of it in standard English. DA Language, Exercise 1: You can make the task simpler by telling pupils that verbs 1, 2 and 6 are on page 79. The remaining verbs are on page 80.
