Reading Help on the Bus

Kim and Granny went into town to do the shopping. When they had got everything they needed, they went to the bus stop. Granny was tired so Kim helped her. She carried one of the bags. They had to wait a long time for the bus. At last the bus came and lots of people got on. Kim held Granny’s arm. She tried to find a seat for Granny but the bus was full. Poor Granny had to stand. She looked very tired. Then a boy noticed Granny and he stood up.

“Would you like to sit here?” he asked. He pointed to his empty seat. Granny’s face lit up. She smiled and nodded. “Thank you,” she said. “You are very kind.” Then she sat down in the boy’s seat. Kim said, “Thank you” too and she smiled at the boy. Then she looked at Granny and she smiled again. Granny was fast asleep.

CR Let’s talk: Let pupils tell you what they would say both in Creole and in standard English. Ask what they would say to a friend and what they would say to a teacher. • Pause after ‘She looked very tired’ (line 7). Ask pupils what they think might happen next. • Look at the word ‘kind’ and words with similar spelling patterns (e.g. find, mind, blind, bind). You may want to draw attention to the word ‘wind’ with its different pronunciations and meanings.
