Language: past tense of verbs ending in ‘y’
If the root word ends in a consonant followed by ‘y’, change the ‘y’ to ‘ i ’ and add ‘ ed ’. I carr y the bag. è I carr ied the bag.

Watch out! If the letter that comes before ‘y’ is a vowel, just add ‘ ed ’. Melissa pray ed in church on Sunday.
CR Speaking and listening: Encourage pupils to be creative. Allow them to use Creole, especially for the words people say. ICT Use a phone to record some of the retellings. Play it to pupils and ask them to say what was good and what could be improved. • Language: If appropriate to your class, offer some past-tense sentences in Creole for translation into standard English.
