It lives in the trees and eats fruit, seeds, flowers and leaves. page 44 This is a turtle. It is a hawksbill turtle. It is called that because its mouth looks like the beak of a hawk. It lives in the sea and eats both plants and animals. page 45 This is a monkey. It is a green monkey and it lives in Barbados, St. Kitts and Nevis and St. Martin. These monkeys live on the ground and in the trees. They eat seeds and leaves and also insects and birds’ eggs. page 46 This is a fish called an angel fish. It lives in the sea but a lot of people also keep them as pets. Angel fish eat plants but they also eat other smaller fish and shrimps. Unit 15: A Little Flower, pages 56–57 Ask pupils to point to the relevant part of the plant on page 57 as you read the following. Plants help people and animals to live. They provide food for us and for animals. They also make oxygen which we need to breathe. Plants have different parts to them just like we do. We have arms, a nose and a mouth and they all do different jobs. The different parts of a plant also do different jobs. The roots are normally underground. They keep the plant in place so that it does not fall over or blow away. Roots also suck up water and minerals from the soil. The stem holds up the plant. It is like a straw and brings water from the roots to the rest of the plant. The leaves use light, water and warmth to make food ( the process of photosynthesis ). They also help the plant to ‘breathe’ and make the air cleaner for us to breathe. The flower smells nice and is brightly coloured to attract insects. Insects help the plant to make seeds. Seeds travel to different places where they grow into more flowers and fruit. The wind scatters some of the seeds. Birds eat and drop others. Unit 16: How to Grow Beans, pages 58–61 These action rhymes are additional examples of instructions. Read them aloud and ask pupils to follow the directions. Extension: Read the rhymes again and ask pupils to tell you which words rhyme. 1 Teddy bear, teddy bear, Turn around. Teddy bear, teddy bear, Touch the ground.

“I will do it,” he said as he mixed the ingredients. “I will do it,” he said as he put the mixture in the pans. “I will do it,” he said as he put the pans in the oven. page 38 The delicious smell of freshly baked bread filled the air and Tiger called his three children. They came running up, closely followed by Anansi. Tiger came out of his house carrying a steaming loaf, straight from the oven. He smiled at his children. “Help me eat this lovely bread, please.” “I will help!” said each one. But one voice was louder than any of the children’s. It was Anansi. “I will help you eat it! I will help! I will help!” he shouted. page 39 “No! You will not,” said Tiger fiercely. “I will eat it myself.” Then Tiger sat down with his children to eat the best bread they had ever tasted. Unit 11: What Happens Next, page 41 Before pupils look at the pictures on page 41, read this text aloud. Ask the questions which follow to check pupils’ comprehension. Jake liked going to the supermarket with Mom but today it was taking a long time. Mom was at the fish counter when Jake saw his friend, Tom. “Look at this,” said Tom, showing him the little car he held in his hand. He showed Jake the top and the bottom and the inside of the car and he let Jake push it along the supermarket floor. Then Jake turned back to the fish counter. But Mom wasn’t there! He looked all around but he couldn’t see her. He felt a bit scared. What if she had gone home without him? He ran to the front of the store.

Before selecting the ending, ask: 1 Where does the story take place? 2 Who are the main characters? 3 Retell the story so far.

Tell pupils to look at the pictures on page 41 while you read three possiblities for what happened next. Ask pupils to select the one they prefer. What Happened Next 1 There was Mom! Jake ran to her and she gave him a big hug. What Happened Next 2 A lady in uniform stopped Jake as he left the store. She said kindly, “Come back inside with me. I work for the supermarket and I’ll help you find your Mom.” What Happened Next 3 Jake looked all around. There were lots of people but he couldn’t see Mom. He didn’t know what to do. Unit 12: Animals, pages 43–46 Look at each photograph and ask pupils to tell you what they know about the animal before you read the relevant part of the following text aloud.
