Language Tree SB 5

Unit 11

Persuasive language

Writers use persuasive language to make things seem appealing. To persuade their readers they use interesting adjectives and figures of speech .

3 Add persuasive adjectives to the following sentences. Example: Swim in the pool. è Swim in the crystal clear pool. 1 Follow the trail through the forest.

4 Watch the birds in the trees. 5 Buy a snack for lunch. 6 Wander around the ruins.

2 Have a drink at the Beach Bar. 3 Rest for a while under the trees.

Writers often use different figures of speech to make their writing more appealing. A metaphor describes something by saying it is something else: the archway of overhanging branches The archway is a metaphor telling us that the branches are like an archway.

4 Identify the metaphors in the following sentences. 1 The mountain towered over the bay. 2 The tiny fish were silver arrows in the stream. 3 There was an ocean of boiling water in the crater. 4 The setting sun was a ball of fire.

5 The white clouds were balls of cotton wool. 6 The storm was an angry giant in the sky.

Hyperbole uses exaggeration to produce an effect: Ancient gommier trees that are as old as the hills . The writer uses exaggeration to tell us that the trees are very old.

5 Identify the hyperbole in these sentences. What is the writer telling us? 1 The water was icy cold. 4 My new sneakers are killing me. 2 It was a boiling hot day. 5 You can walk there in two seconds. 3 He walked as slowly as a snail. 6 The hike took forever.

• Tell students to find examples of persuasive adjectives used in the webpage. • Exercise 4: Ask students to explain the metaphors , e.g . the mountain is so high it looks like a tower. • Exercise 5: Explain the hyperbole in the first sentence. The water is not really icy; the writer is telling us it is very cold. Then let students work out the meanings of the hyperbole in the other sentences for themselves.
