Language Prepositions

Prepositions usually come before a noun or pronoun . They show how the noun or pronoun is related to other people or things in the sentence: The family got into the canoe. They travelled up the river.

WB 5 p66

1 Find the prepositions in the paragraph below.

We walked along the narrow track to the boats. We took a canoe trip on the river with a local guide. I sat next to my little sister. It was cool in the canoe because the branches of the trees hung over the river. The trip ended with a drink at the Bush Bar. We ate lunch in a café near the beach. Then we walked around Prince Rupert Island. It was hot, so we sat under some trees.

• Speaking and listening: Read aloud from Listening Texts page 184.

CR You could deliver the message first in Creole as if the speaker were speaking to a local friend and then in Standard English, as if she were speaking to a visitor from another country. You could also allow students to role play the dialogue and present the voicemail message in Creole, then code switch to Standard English. ICT Record some students’ phone conversations and voicemail messages and play back for comment.
