Word work: phrasal verbs

Some verb phrases are made up of a verb + one or more prepositions. These phrases have a special meaning, e.g. Look + up (consult) è I looked up Dominica on the internet.

Last month we flew to Jamaica for a family reunion. My mother looked up the flight times on the internet and booked our seats. The day before we left we wrapped ______ the gifts for our relations and I tried ______ my new clothes. We had to get ______ early to catch the plane because it took ______ at 8.30 a.m. I felt very excited as I got ______ the plane. Writing: project Work in groups to plan a class trip to a place of interest. 1 Decide what type of place you would like to visit, for example: • a historical place • a museum 2 Brainstorm the information you need to plan your trip: • name of place • information about the place you plan to visit, e.g. opening hours • what you can see and do there • how you will travel there • food and drink • likely cost of trip. 3 Each member of the group selects an item to research. • Find out as much information as you can about the item you selected. • Look on the internet and ask your teacher and family members. • Make notes and report back to your group. 4 Draft your section of the project. Revise it and make a neat copy. Include drawings, maps and plans.

Type your section of the project. Email it to your group. Collate everyone’s work in one file.

Complete your project. Collect everyone’s work and create a folder with a title page.

• Project: Remind students that when they work as a group, they must negotiate with each other to reach a joint decision. • Students can use a variety of skills when preparing this project, e.g. interpreting timetables and maps, picking out factual information such as opening hours, working out the cost of the trip. DA  Students can contribute to the project according to their different abilities and learning styles, e.g. computer skills, illustrations, cover design.
