Alliteration

Alliteration is when we repeat consonant sounds which are close together: the s lippery s nake s lithers Alliteration is often used in writing to create an effect and make phrases memorable.

4 Copy the sentences below. Underline the alliteration in each one . Example: A funny flying fish flew in front of the boat.

1 The slow slimy snail slid down the slope. 2 The hurricane howled around the houses. 3 The river was a raging torrent. 4 The waves were whirling white horses.

5 Write a phrase or sentence about each picture using alliteration.

Onomatopoeia

A word which imitates a sound is known as onomatopoeia : Monkeys are drumming – the word drumming sounds like the noise of a drum. Hummingbirds are humming – the word humming resembles the sound made when someone hums.

The snake hissed as it pounced on the mouse.
