Language Adverbs
We use adverbs to tell us more about how actions are done: The animals danced excitedly . Excitedly is an adverb telling us how the animals danced. Most adverbs are formed by adding ‘-ly’ to adjectives: calm è calm ly
1 Add ‘-ly’ to the words in brackets to make adverbs. Adverbs of time, manner and place
Adverbs have different functions. They tell us when , how or where actions are performed: Yesterday the animals had a party . Yesterday is an adverb of time . It tells us when . They danced wildly . Wildly is an adverb of manner . It tells us how . A lot of animals were there . There is an adverb of place . It tells us where .

• Remind students that some adverbs are irregular , e.g. well – She sang well . • To find out if an adverb is an adverb of time, manner or place, ask the questions when , how or where , e.g. How did it rain? Heavily. • Write different actions on the board, e.g. walk, speak, run . Ask students to suggest as many different adverbs as they can to describe how these actions might be done.
