Sequencing

The sequence of events is the order in which they happen. We need to follow the correct sequence: • when we retell the events in a story • when we describe the different stages in a process • when we give instructions for doing something. To make the sequence clear we use sequencing words like first, next, then, as soon as, finally.

Put the instructions for growing bean sprouts in the correct order. a) Stand the jar in a light place for 8–10 hours. b) Add water to cover the beans in the jar. c) Fill one quarter of the glass jar with dried beans. d) Your beans will sprout in two to three days. e) Take a clean glass jar. f)  Drain the water off the beans and put the jar in a cool place.

Discuss the questions. What must you do first when you make a tomato salad? Which ingredients are used in the salad? Why should you wash the tomatoes thoroughly? What do you add to the salad before you eat it?

3 Give clear instructions for making a tomato salad. Use sequencing words: first, next, then, after that, finally .

4 Choose a dish or drink you like. Tell your partner how to prepare it.

• Sequencing: To stress the importance of giving instructions in the correct sequence, give students instructions for a simple everyday task (e.g. getting dressed ) in the wrong order. Students will enjoy miming your instructions. • Speaking and listening: Read aloud from Listening Texts page 185. Remind students of safety at home. An adult should supervise them when they are cooking.
