1 The students covered the trays in plastic. 2 The trays were placed under a window. 3 The soil in the nursery beds was prepared. 4 The students planted the seedlings in rows. 5 The plants were watered every day. 6 The first tomatoes were very small. 7 The ripe tomatoes were harvested by the students. 8 They kept the best tomatoes for their seeds.
Passive verbs are made up of the verb be + the past participle . The passive voice can be used in the past , present and future . Past: The seedlings were transplanted last week. Present: They are watered daily. Future: The tomatoes will be harvested next month .
5 Complete the sentences with verbs in the present passive. Example: Beans are planted (plant) in the school garden in October. 1 The garden beds _______ (prepare) for the seedlings. 2 Compost _______ (mix) with the soil in the beds.
3 The seedlings _______ (water) every day. 4 The garden beds _______ (weed) regularly. 5 Fertiliser _______ (add) to make the beans grow well. 6 The beans _______ (harvest) when they are ready. 7 They _______ (use) to make delicious soup. 8 Some beans _______ (keep) for next year’s crop.
• Passive voice: Give the students plenty of examples of active and passive voice so they hear clearly the difference between them, e.g. The dog stole the meat / The meat was stolen by the dog. • Past, present and future: Explain that to form the past passive we use was / were + past participle ; for the present passive we use is / are + past participle and for the future we use will be + past participle.
