Word work: homophones

Homophones are words which sound the same but have different spellings and meanings: pear: I picked a pear to eat with my lunch. pair: I saw a pair of birds on the branch of the tree . Growing sweet potatoes 6th February We placed a sweet potato into a jar of water. We used toothpicks to hold it in the mouth of the jar.

•  Word work: Students can write sentences to illustrate the other meanings of the homophones, e.g. The concert was a great success. •  Writing: Encourage students to use a mix of active and passive verbs in their account.
