Language: relative pronouns
We can use the words who and which to join two sentences: Which: My mother bought me a cell phone. It is very useful. The cell phone which my mother bought me is very useful. Who: Parents buy expensive items for their children. They are too indulgent. Parents who buy expensive items for their children are too indulgent.
Join the sentences with who or which . Example: Kim found her cell phone. It was at the bottom of her bag.

1 This is my new phone. I bought it yesterday. 2 A woman showed me how to use it. She works in the shop. 3 My mother often calls her sister. She moved to the USA last year. 4 My aunt lives in Baltimore. It is on the east coast of the USA. 5 I sent a text message to the girl. She had promised to meet me. 6 Skype is an internet service. You can use it to talk to your friends online. 7 My older sister uses Skype to talk to her friend. She lives in London. 8 My mother has a new tablet. She enjoys using it very much. We use who when talking about the subject of the sentence and whom when talking about the object : The woman who wrote to the editor was protesting about a photograph. Who refers to the subject of the verb wrote (the woman). The man to whom she wrote was the editor of the newspaper. In this sentence, whom refers to the object of the verb wrote (the man).

• Relative pronouns, Exercise 1: Point out that when we join sentences with relative pronouns, we often leave out the subject of the second clause, as in the example Kim found her cell phone which was at the bottom of her bag .
