Speaking and listening: introduction and vote of thanks Introducing a speaker When a guest speaker visits your class, you may be asked to introduce him or her to the audience. Here are some tips. • Welcome the visitor and introduce him or her to your class. • Tell your audience one or two interesting facts about the speaker, but be brief.
1 Practise the introduction given to Mrs. Adams.
Good morning everyone. It is my pleasure to introduce Mrs. Sadie Adams. Mrs. Adams works for the Environment Protection Agency, so I am sure we will learn a lot from her. Please join me in welcoming Mrs. Adams to our class. ( Everyone claps )
Proposing the vote of thanks At the end of the presentation, a member of the audience thanks the speaker. • Mention one or two interesting points from his or her speech. • Ask the audience to join you in thanking the speaker and start clapping.
Practise the vote of thanks.
2
Mrs. Adams, it is my privilege to propose the vote of thanks on behalf of my fellow students. You have told us how important it is to preserve our forests. I’m sure we will all try to use less paper in future. Please join me in thanking Mrs. Adams for speaking to us today. ( clap )
3 Prepare an introduction and a vote of thanks for these guest speakers. • Mr. Samuel Hill, author of several books for children • Miss Jessie Gomez, fire officer working at local fire station
• Let students practise the introduction and vote of thanks they heard in the listening exercise before creating their own. You could suggest different speakers and topics to add variety. • Choose students to present the introduction and vote of thanks they have prepared.
