Unit 16
Language: reported speech
I love painting.
Direct speech tells us the exact words people say. We use quotation marks with direct speech. “ I love painting ,” said Louise. Reported speech tells us what people said. When we report speech, we change the tense of the verb. We often need to change the pronouns too. We do not use quotation marks with reported speech. Louise said that she loved painting . 1 Change these sentences from direct to reported speech. Example: “I want to write a rap,” said Kirk. è Kirk said that he wanted to write a rap. 1 “I have some news for you,” Mrs. Charles told her class. 2 “The campaign sounds very interesting,” said Joshua. 3 “We are good at singing,” the girls said. 4 “Joshua plays the guitar very well,” his friend told me. 5 “My writing is very neat,” said Keisha. 6 Greg announced, “I do not want to take part in the campaign.” 7 “We need to find more trees,” Shelly said. 8 “We do not have enough time to practise,” the students complained.

• Exercise 1: Ask students to find the verb in each piece of direct speech. Remind them to put this verb in the past tense in reported speech. Identify the sentences where pronouns need to be changed. • Exercise 2: Point out that will (future tense) in direct speech becomes would in reported speech.
