Language Tree SB 5

Unit 16

4 Write the following sentences as direct speech. Remember to put quotation marks around the words each person said. Example: Joshua said that he would play the guitar. è “I will play the guitar,” said Joshua. 1 Luke said that his mother would help with the cakes. 2 Xavier told his friends that he had written a poem. 3 Tracy told her mother that she needed some money. 4 The principal told the students that she would watch their show. 5 Emma said that her sister had taught her a new song. 6 Dana said that her brother wanted to be in the choir. 7 Mrs. Charles told her students that she was pleased with them. 8 The students said that they would remember the campaign for a long time. Word work: contractions In direct speech we often use contractions instead of full verb forms: “ I’ve received a letter.” è I have received a letter. “ I’ll read it out.” è I will read it out. 1 Find the contractions in Shelly’s diary on pages 140–141. What are the full verb forms? 2 Copy what Emma told her father. Write the contractions in full.

WB 5 p56

There is “There’s going to be a singing competition and I’ve

3 Rewrite the paragraph below using contractions. I’ve entered. It’s next week. I didn’t want to go in for it at first. I don’t think I’m the best singer, but there weren’t many people in my class who wanted to sing. They’re better at dancing. I’m not sure how well I’ll do. I know I won’t win!”

I have written a really good rap for the competition. I would love to win a prize but I do not know if I will do well. My friend Greg does not want to enter the competition because he is too busy. He did not paint a picture in his art class. He has not written a poem. He will not go to the final of the competition.

DA Exercise 4: Work through this exercise orally. Students can tell you what the spoken words were. • Word work: Discuss with students when it is appropriate to use contractions, e.g. in speech and in informal writing such as letters or emails to friends .
