4 Complete the sentences with the correct verb forms . 1 If we wanted to go out to the reef, we would hire (hire) a boat. 2 We ______ (damage) the coral if we walked on it.

Colons

We use colons to introduce lists. We place a comma between each item in the list, but a comma is not generally used before and : The reef is home to thousands of sea creatures : tiny brightly coloured fish , spiny lobsters , sea turtles and conch.

Punctuate these sentences correctly.

• Remind students that colons are only used after complete sentences. They are not needed in sentences like this one: We saw barracuda, stingrays and sharks on the reef.
