I was really proud that my sports teacher had chosen me to compete in the Junior Championships. My uncle had bought me a special pair of sneakers to help me run faster. All my friends wanted to see the sneakers, so I opened my sports bag. I couldn’t see them in there, so I took everything out of the bag. The sneakers were not there. Then I remembered. I had shown the sneakers to my little brother when we were eating breakfast, and he had tried them on. I must have forgotten to put them back in my bag. I knew I could borrow a pair from one of my friends, but it wouldn’t be the same without my uncle’s special sneakers. Suddenly I had a brainwave. I told my sports teacher, Mr. Adams, about my problem. “May I use your cell phone to call my mother?” I asked him. “Of course you may, Kayla,” he said, and handed me the phone. The phone rang three times, and then to my relief, I heard my mother’s voice. “Don’t worry, Kayla,” she reassured me. “We found your sneakers. Your brother is on his way to the stadium. He will give them to you when you get there.”

• Emphasise the importance of having a story plan . This gives a sense of direction to the story. Students can change it as they write if they get new ideas, but it gives them something to work from. • This story uses the flashback technique. The writer starts in the middle of the story and looks back to what has caused the problem.
