Planning Introduction When phone invented, by whom Paragraph 1 Morse, sending signals by cable Paragraph 2 The first telephones. Queen Victoria had one. Paragraph 3 Phones today: cell phones Conclusion Why this invention is important The Telephone The first telephone was invented in 1876 by the American scientist called, Alexander Graham Bell. He designed a machine which could transmit sounds along electric wires. In fact Bell was not the first person to design a device which could send signals along wires. Forty years before Bell’s invention, Samuel Morse designed a system which sent signals along a cable as a series of clicks, known as Morse Code. A cable was laid under the Atlantic Ocean in 1866. It was used to send messages from the USA to Europe. Bell’s telephone was, however, the first machine which could transmit the sound of the human voice. In 1878, Bell demonstrated his machine to Queen Victoria. She was impressed, and became one of the very first people in the world to own a telephone. She used it to make calls from her summer residence to Buckingham Palace in London. After that phones quickly became very popular. Telephones today do not use cables or wires. The first cell phone appeared in the 1970s, but they were very heavy. Today, cell phones are so small you can keep them in your pocket. There are more than five billion cell phones in the world today. In conclusion, it is difficult to imagine a world without phones. They have made it possible for us to keep in touch with our friends and families wherever we are. I believe that they are one of the greatest inventions ever made.
