phone or listen to music on your headphones when you’re near a road. You need to keep your eyes and ears open all the time. Safety is important when you’re travelling by bus too. Don’t get out of your seat when the bus is moving. The driver may have to brake suddenly, and if you are standing up you may be thrown down the bus. Keep your hands and arms inside the bus and don’t lean out; this could be dangerous. Follow these simple rules to keep safe on the roads. Now, has anyone got any questions? Unit 7: Assessment (page 67) News item on radio Traffic came to a standstill on the main road into Kingstown this morning when a truck carrying a heavy load of vegetables overturned. Witnesses reported that the truck swerved to avoid a motorcyclist before hitting the kerb and rolling on to its side. The truck driver was taken to hospital but his injuries are not serious. Fortunately no one else was hurt. The road was closed for several hours and there were long traffic jams in the surrounding roads. As a result, many students were late for school. Mrs Pearl Campbell, who was on her way to work, witnessed the accident. She said, ‘The truck was travelling quite fast when the motorcyclist pulled out. The truck driver tried to avoid him, but he lost control of his vehicle and hit the kerb.’

Unit 6: Assessment (page 59) Janette woke early and walked down to the sea. She heard the sound of the surf pounding on the shore and the harsh cries of the sea birds. The golden globe of the sun was rising over the horizon and the waves sparkled in its light. Janette was alone except for a fisherman she saw in the distance mending his fishing nets. She took off her shoes and let the warm sand run between her toes. Some pretty shells lay along the shoreline. Janette picked one up and felt its cool smooth surface. Then she put it to her ear and listened to the sound of the sea. She sat on a rock, enjoying the tranquil scene. A dog barking in the distance woke her from her dream. It was time to go home. Unit 7: Speaking and listening (page 62) Presentation from resource person Good morning students. I work for the Traffic Police and I’m here to talk to you about road safety. Roads can be dangerous places, so you must take care on your way to school. When you cross the road, remember these simple rules. Find a safe place and listen for traffic. Look right, then left, then right again. If the road is clear, walk straight across. Don’t run. You might trip over, and an oncoming car might not be able to stop in time. When you walk along the road, keep as close to the side as you can. Listen carefully before you walk around a bend, as there might be a car coming towards you. Don’t talk on a cell
