Listening Texts

Firstly, sports are good for your health. Exercise builds up your muscles and develops your strength. Today many young people are overweight because they spend too much time inside sitting at their computers. They need to get out in the fresh air and burn off some energy. Secondly, sports reduce stress and help you do better in your studies. After half an hour of exercise you will return to work feeling refreshed and able to concentrate better. Lastly, young people benefit from sports in other ways. Through playing games like cricket and basketball, we learn to work as a team and to cooperate with others. These are important skills for life. To sum up, playing sports brings many benefits to young people. That is why I believe everyone should do sports at school. Unit 11: Speaking and listening (page 101) Answerphone message Hi Deanna, this is Estelle. We’re planning a boat ride up the Indian River tomorrow morning. Would you like to join us? We’re setting out from Roseau at 6.00 am. I know it’s early but our canoe leaves at 8.00. All the other trips were booked. We can pick you up at your house. I’m preparing a picnic, so you don’t need to bring anything to eat. We’ll go to Purple Turtle beach afterwards, so bring your swimming things. Send me a text to let me know if you can come. Bye for now! Unit 13: Listen up! (page 115) Before reading the poem, explain to your students that many of the best-known fables were told by Aesop , who lived in Greece more than 2,000 years ago. Around 400 years ago, Jean de la Fontaine turned many of Aesop’s fables into poems. Some of the words used will need explaining to students (see notes at end of poem).

Unit 8: Speaking and listening (page 71) CR You could change the speech in this story to Creole as you read it out. One day the animals worked hard to plant a field of corn. It was a hot day, and Compere Rabbit grew tired. He tried to think of a way of taking a break without making the other animals suspicious. He held his paw up in the air and pulled a face. ‘Ow!’ he shouted at the top of his voice. ‘Ow! I’ve got a thorn in my paw. I must go and wash it.’ He looked for a cool place to take a nap and found an old well. There were two buckets hanging in it, one at the top and the other at the bottom. He jumped into the top bucket. To his surprise, he shot down to the bottom of the well. The empty bucket shot up to the top. ‘Bother!’ Compere Rabbit said to himself. ‘How will I get out?’ Compere Fox had been watching Compere Rabbit. He knew that Compere Rabbit did not have a thorn in his paw. He thought the rabbit must have some treasure at the bottom of the well. ‘What are you doing down there, Compere Rabbit?’ he called. ‘I’m catching fish. Come and join me. There’s plenty for both of us.’ Eagerly, Compere Fox jumped into the empty bucket. He was heavier than Compere Rabbit so he plunged towards the bottom. Halfway down, he passed Compere Rabbit on his way up. ‘Goodbye, Compere Fox,’ shouted Compere Rabbit cheekily. In a moment, he was at the top of the well. He jumped out and ran away laughing. Unit 9: Assessment (page 86) Good morning students. I would like to propose the motion that ‘Everyone should play sports at school’.
