Listening Texts
Unit 16: Listen up! (page 139) Explain to students that they will hear a presentation from a resource person. Before this person speaks, a student will introduce her to the class. At the end of the presentation, another student will give the vote of thanks. Introduction Good morning everyone. It is my pleasure to introduce Mrs. Sadie Adams. Mrs. Adams works for the Environment Protection Agency, so I am sure we will learn a lot from her. Please join me in welcoming Mrs. Adams to our class. Presentation Good morning students. Thank you for inviting me to talk to you during your ‘Let’s Reduce Waste’ week. I’m very glad to see that you are trying to reduce the amount of paper you use in class. I see you’re collecting old newspaper for recycling too. Well done! I expect you’ve heard people saying, “Don’t waste paper”, or “Recycle paper to save trees”. That’s because paper is made from trees. The wood in trees is made up of fibre. When a tree is cut down, the logs go to a paper factory where the fibre is turned into pulp. This pulp is used to make paper. So, the more paper we use, the more trees we have to cut down. Many people say that trees are the lungs of our planet. They absorb carbon dioxide and give out the oxygen we need to breathe. When we fell trees, we harm the environment. An area of forest as big as 20 football fields is cut down every minute. If this goes on, by the end of the century there will be hardly any forests left. We are organising a tree-planting campaign for schools. I hope you will want to take part.
Vote of thanks Mrs Adams, it is my privilege to propose the vote of thanks on behalf of my fellow students. You have told us how important it is to preserve our forests. I’m sure we will all want to take part in your tree-planting campaign. Please join me in thanking Mrs. Adams for speaking to us today.
