(Roslyn’s home at dinner time) MOTHER: What’s wrong, Roslyn? You’ve been quiet all evening. You’ve hardly touched your dinner. ROSLYN: ( looking down at her plate) It’s nothing, Mom. I’ve done something silly, that’s all. MOTHER: You seem worried. You’d better tell me about it. ROSLYN: (slowly) Do you remember I told you about the sports coach who came to our school to teach us how to play ‘Quik Cricket’? MOTHER: Yes, I do. Didn’t he give you some cricket equipment so you could practise for the Kiddy Cricket League? ROSLYN: Yes, he did. He said that if we did well in the league, we could play at Kensington Oval during the lunch break of the next International Test Series. MOTHER: That would be wonderful. Why are you upset? ROSLYN: We have cricket practice during the lunch break. The girls love cricket, but the boys never let us play. Some of us decided to borrow a bat and some wickets to practise at home. Now we can’t find the stumps. We’ve looked everywhere. MOTHER: Did you ask Mr. Cooper if you could borrow the equipment? ROSLYN: (looking embarrassed) No, we didn’t. We thought he might say no. MOTHER: That was very irresponsible. You must tell him what happened. Say that we will replace the lost stumps.
