Unit 3

( At school the next day ) ROSLYN:

(quietly) Sir, I have something to tell you.

MR. COOPER: Yes Roslyn, what is it? ROSLYN:

Some of us took some cricket equipment home to practise and now we have lost it. We are really sorry. We are going to replace it.

MR. COOPER: Why did you take it home? Can’t you practise at school? ROSLYN: We would like to sir, but the boys never let us use it. MR. COOPER: You should not borrow things without asking for permission. However, Roslyn, it was brave of you to tell me about it. MR. COOPER: ( speaking to the whole class ) Listen carefully, please! I feel very

disappointed. Some girls took some cricket equipment home without asking for permission. However, they told me that the boys were not letting them use it. This is not fair. Cricket is not just about winning matches. You must all learn to be good sportsmen and women. From now on we will have regular practice for both the girls’ and the boys’ teams.

1 Who taught the students in Roslyn’s school to play Quik Cricket? 2 Why did Roslyn and her friends borrow some cricket equipment? 3 How did Roslyn’s mother know that her daughter was worried? 4 Explain why Roslyn’s mother tells her she was irresponsible . 5 How do you think Roslyn felt before she spoke to Mr. Cooper? 6 Mr. Cooper thought Roslyn was brave because: a) she took the equipment b) she told him the truth c) she told her mother the truth d) she promised to replace the equipment 7 Why does Mr. Cooper say that the boys’ behaviour is not fair?

8 Do you think that students should be allowed to take equipment home? Why? Why not? 9 What is your opinion of Mr. Cooper’s solution to the problem? Give reasons to justify your opinion. 10 What lesson have you learnt from this story?

• Practise reading part of the dialogue aloud with your class. Focus on correct pitch and enunciation. Then let students practise in pairs. • Encourage students to express their opinions about the different characters in the story. Remind them to support their opinions with evidence or reasons. • Extension: Ask students to tell you about other plays or stories they have read where they learnt a lesson.
