Language Simple present tense: subject–verb agreement
WB 5 p129
We use the simple present tense for facts or for things which happen regularly : The girls love cricket. (fact) The students play cricket during the lunch break . (regular action) Verbs must agree with their subjects. If the subject is singular (one person or thing) we use a singular verb: Roslyn bowls the ball. If the subject is plural , we use a plural verb: We play cricket after school . 1 Find the subjects of the following sentences. Are they singular or plural? Example: The girls often play cricket. è the girls: plural 1 My grandparents like to watch cricket matches. 2 My brother and I are on the cricket team. 3 We practise after school on Fridays.
4 The sports equipment is kept in the games cupboard. 5 The examinations take place at the end of the year. 6 Jack’s mother expects him to help at home.

CR Compare the present tense in Creole and Standard English. Remind students that in Standard English, the 3rd person singular verb ends in ‘s’. Make present tense sentences in Creole so students can observe the difference.
