A synonym is a word which has a similar meaning to another word: Roslyn was upset because she had lost the stumps. Upset is a synonym for worried . 1 Replace the underlined words with synonyms. Example: I found a mistake in my work. è an error 1 We plan to go to the match on Saturday. 2 You can go outside if the rain stops . 3 Jason tried to hit the ball hard.

•  Word work: Point out that words often have more than one synonym, e.g. clever, smart, intelligent . Ask students to think of as many synonyms as they can for words like big, small, happy . Encourage them to use synonyms to replace frequently used words.
