Unit 4
Language: simple past tense
We use the simple past tense for actions which were completed in the past. To make the simple past tense we usually add ‘d’ or ‘ed’ to the root verb: Campbell-Brown enter ed college in the USA. She compet ed in the Olympic Games.
1 Change these sentences to the simple past. Example: Joshua finishes first. è Joshua finished first. 1 He races in the relay.
2 Everyone shouts for Joshua. 3 We wait to hear the result.
4 She hopes to win. 5 I cheer my friends. 6 It starts to rain.
For verbs ending in a consonant + vowel, double the consonant and add ‘ed’ : cla p è clap ped grab è grab bed For verbs ending in a consonant + ‘y’, drop ‘y’ and add ‘ied’ : carr y è carr ied marr y è marr ied
2 Complete the sentences with the simple past of the verbs in brackets. Example: We all clapped (clap) for Joshua.
