To compare longer adjectives we use more or the most: Dolphins are more graceful than whales. The most graceful fish are flying fish.

We add suffixes to some nouns to change them to adjectives : The fish was a bright colour . (noun) The fish was very colourful . (adjective)

2 Add suffixes to the nouns in brackets to form adjectives. You may need to change the spellings of the nouns when you add suffixes. Example: It was peaceful (peace) sitting on the beach on my own. 1 The island where I live has great ________ (nature) beauty. 2 The weather was very ________ (storm) on the weekend. 3 You should always be ________ (care) when you go swimming. 4 It is ________ (danger) to swim out to sea on your own. 5 Dean’s father rebuked him for his ________ (fool) behaviour. 6 We had a ________ (sleep) night because of the storm. 7 Everyone was ________ (help) when I slipped on the rocks. 8 My mother told me to be ________ (sense) when I went to the beach.

• Remind students that suffixes are letters added to the end of words to change their meaning. Tell them that the spelling of the original words may change when a suffix is added, They should use their dictionaries to check the new spellings.
