Unit 7

Predicting

Comprehension strategy

Predicting means using clues to work out what is likely to happen in a reading text. You can find clues in pictures and headings, and in the text itself.

1 Read these titles. Predict what types of texts they are. 1 When Dinosaurs Walked the Earth 2 Tales of the Caribbean 3 Lightning Bolt: A Runner’s Story 4 Caribbean Cookery

2 Read these first sentences of stories. Predict what they will be about. 1 Joelle crept up to her room. She hoped no one would notice the broken vase. 2 Akim heard footsteps behind him. They seemed to come closer and closer. Speaking and listening: presentation 1 Discuss road safety. How can children keep safe on the roads? Think of three important safety rules.

WB 5 p106

Look carefully before you cross.

Don’t play near the road.

Listen to the presentation.

3 Discuss these questions. • What is the purpose of the presentation? • Explain how to cross a road safely. • What should you not do when you are close to a road? Why? • What advice does the speaker give to bus passengers? 4 Work in groups. Prepare a set of road safety rules for pedestrians.

Create a poster with your road safety rules. Display it in your classroom.

• Speaking and listening: Students could prepare a skit or a jingle about crossing the road to present to younger children. • Exercise 2: Explain that students will hear a presentation from a policewoman. First read the presentation (Listening Texts page 183) without stopping. Ask general questions, e.g. What advice did the policewoman give about crossing the road? Read it again, pausing from time to time. Students then discuss the questions in pairs.
