Language

All sentences have a subject and a verb . Many sentences also include an object . Subject Verb Object The minibus hit the small black car. The object receives the action.

We use pronouns to replace nouns. If the noun is the subject of the sentence, we replace it with a subject pronoun : The boy played near the road. He played near the road. If the noun is the object of the sentence, we replace it with an object pronoun : The driver did not see the boy . She did not see him .

2 Read out the sentences in Exercise 1. Use pronouns to replace the underlined words. Example: She bought an ice cream for him. 3 Choose the correct pronouns to complete the sentences. 1 My friend told us ( we / us ) about the accident. 2 ______ ( I / Me ) walk past the post office every day. 3 The policewoman told ______ ( he / him ) to be careful. 4 I saw ______ ( they / them ) beside the road. 5 The girl’s grandmother gave ______ ( she / her ) some money. 6 Did ______ ( they / them ) see ______ ( she / her ) at the market? 7 ______ ( He / Him ) took ______ ( I / me ) shopping. 8 ______ ( She / Her ) told ______ ( they / them ) not to be late.

CR  Students often find using pronouns in Standard English challenging as they are used differently in Creole. Help them to understand the difference between the subject and the object of sentences. • You may wish to read out the sentences in Exercise 3 in both Standard English and Creole to show how they differ. • Exercise 1: Ask questions to help student identify the subject and object of the verbs, e.g. Who bought an ice cream? The boy’s mother ( subject ). What did she buy? An ice cream ( object ).
