Possessive pronouns

The following words are possessive pronouns . They are also used to show who owns things: mine yours his hers ours theirs There is no noun after these pronouns: This bag is yours . That bag is mine .

7 Complete the paragraph with mine , yours, his, hers, ours or theirs .

Mrs. Paul is sorting out the things her students have left in the classroom. “The sports bag belongs to Dana. The sneakers are hers too. The T-shirt is Ben’s. The shorts are ______ too. These books belong to Javon and Greg. The pens are ______ as well. Those are my car keys under the books. That phone is ______ too. Whose is this lunch box? Is it ______, Kim?”

They refer back to the subject of the verb: The boy hurt himself when he tripped on a stone .

• Exercise 8: Remind students not to confuse pronouns ( mine, yours etc.) with adjectives ( my, your etc.). • Exercise 9: To identify the correct reflexive pronoun, tell students to find the subject of the sentence. If the subject is a noun, they can replace it with a subject pronoun, e.g. Kayla ➞ she ➞ herself .
