Inferring

Inferring means using information like words and pictures to work out what has not been said directly.

1  What can you infer from these pictures?

Ask yourself questions about the pictures using question words: Who? When? Where? Why? How? What if?

2  What can you infer from these statements? Example:  Anansi stamped his feet and stormed off. Anansi is angry about something. 1 Anansi’s wife sighed when Anansi was late home again. 2 Greg hid under the bedclothes when he heard the owl hooting. 3 My heart was thumping as I went up to collect my prize. 4 I stop listening when my brother starts to talk about his new car.

• Discuss character: Students should always provide reasons or evidence to justify the opinions they express of characters. • Inferring: Develop inferential thinking by asking questions which encourage students to read between the lines, e.g. What has just happened? What might happen next? How do you think the person is feeling? Why?
